Plugging in a new controller and hoping the game figures it out is a recipe for frustration — half-mapped buttons, an axis that's inverted, or a throttle that jumps instead of moving smoothly. A few minutes of proper setup up front saves a lot of trial and error later. Here's the complete process for getting TSC-X configured cleanly, whether you're running Train Sim World 6 — where most drivers have landed these days — or still spending time in TSW5.
Before You Start
You don't need much to get going:
- TSC-X connected via USB-C to your PC
- The Sim Workshop Console software installed
- Train Sim World 5 or 6 installed and up to date
Because TSC-X is plug-and-play over USB-C, there's no separate driver installation step to worry about — Windows recognizes it automatically. The only software you need is the Sim Workshop Console itself, which handles device detection and control mapping for both games.
Step 1: Install and Open Sim Workshop Console
Download the Console software from the Sim Workshop site and run the installer. Once it's open, connect TSC-X if you haven't already — the software should detect it within a few seconds and display the lever and button layout on screen.
Take a moment here to move each lever through its full range and press each button on the panel while watching the software's live input display. This confirms everything is being read correctly before you touch either game at all — much easier to catch a connection issue now than to debug it inside a route later.
Step 2: Select Your TSW6 (or TSW5) Profile
The Console software organizes control profiles by simulator, with separate templates for TSW6 and TSW5 — so switching between the two, or driving both depending on which content you own, doesn't mean rebuilding your mapping from scratch each time. Select whichever one matches what you're launching, and the software loads a mapping template built specifically for it: throttle and brake levers assigned to their expected axes, and the auxiliary buttons ready to be mapped to specific functions.
If this is your first time setting up a profile, start from the default template rather than building one from scratch. It's built around how each game's default control scheme expects inputs, and adjusting from a working baseline is much faster than mapping everything manually.
Step 3: Map the Function Buttons
This is where TSC-X's 11-key panel earns its keep, in either game. Rather than digging through in-game menus every time you need to toggle sanding or acknowledge a PZB alert, each function gets its own dedicated physical button:
- PZB acknowledgment — map this to one of the primary panel buttons for quick access, since it's time-sensitive when it triggers
- AFB (cruise control) toggle — a good candidate for one of the illuminated buttons, so you can see its state at a glance
- Sanding — map to a button you can reach without looking down, since you'll often need it while focused on the track ahead
- Whistle/horn — most drivers prefer this on the panel rather than a keyboard key, for both speed and immersion
Within the Console software, click each function in the active profile and press the physical button you want assigned to it. The mapping is saved automatically per profile, so switching between TSW6, TSW5, or other supported simulators won't require remapping every time.
Step 4: Calibrate the Levers
Even with a profile loaded, it's worth checking calibration before your first session. In the Console software's calibration screen, move each lever to its full extremes and back to center. This ensures the software recognizes the true range of motion rather than a slightly narrower window, which can otherwise make it hard to hit exact throttle or brake positions in-game.
If a lever feels like it's not reaching 100% or 0% in-game even at its physical limit, this is almost always a calibration step that got skipped rather than a hardware issue — and it only needs to be done once per profile, not every session.
Step 5: Launch the Game and Verify
With mapping and calibration done, launch TSW6 or TSW5, load into any route, and run through each control before you actually start driving:
- Move the throttle lever and confirm smooth, proportional response
- Move the brake lever and check the same
- Press each mapped button and confirm the correct in-game action fires
- Check that PZB and AFB indicators respond correctly when toggled
Catching a mis-mapped button now is a lot less annoying than discovering it mid-route when you actually need it.
Common Setup Issues
A lever feels reversed or backwards. This is a calibration direction setting, not a hardware fault — check the axis inversion option in the Console software rather than assuming something's wrong with the unit.
Buttons work in the Console software but not in-game. Double check the correct profile (TSW6 vs TSW5) is active and saved. It's an easy step to skip when switching between games or profiles.
Inputs feel slightly delayed. Confirm no other software (older mapping tools, conflicting overlays) is also trying to read the same USB device at the same time — running two pieces of software against one controller is a common source of input lag.
Getting the Most Out of It
Once the basic mapping is solid, it's worth revisiting your button assignments after a few real driving sessions rather than locking them in on day one. Which functions you actually reach for under pressure — versus which ones you thought you'd use — often becomes clearer once you're a few routes in. The Console software makes remapping quick enough that there's no real downside to adjusting as you go, in either game.
